"When Pigs Can Fly"

"When pigs can fly."
I've heard the saying so many times while growing up.
"I'll do this when pigs can fly..."
"I'll belive that when pigs can fly..."
A couple years ago I read a quote:
"They said a black man would become president when pigs could fly; A hundred days after Obama took office swine flu."
On an unrelated note I wrote this a couple nights ago:

"Mankind will reach the moon
When pigs can fly," they said
"So close your eyes and go to sleep
Don't lay awake in bed

No innovation, experimentation
Stay inside the box
The bar need not be raised
And the line we do not cross

Be a good girl, follow rules
Do what you're told to do
Don't tread the road untaken-
It's not expected from you

Keep in line and know your place
And keep your mouth shut tight
Don't believe in what can't be seen
You have only what's in sight

When pigs can fly" they said to me
But surely they don't know
That pigs did fly into my dreams
Years and years ago

How to Measure a Life

How do we measure a man's life? Do we measure it in years or in moments? Is a man's worth told by his bank account and property or by the number of lives he's touched? Is his success determined by the car he drives and the clothes he wears or by the amount of people who consider him a friend?

How do we measure a man's life? Is he to decide if he's achieved all he can or is it society's job to tell him so? To tell him he can do better, to tell him to go on; go on even though he's happiest here.
How do you know when you've reached your goal? Do you ask the people around you? Then why do you tell me what I want? Why do you tell me I can't be happy, can't be myself? Did I ask you to measure my worth?

How do we measure a man's life? We don't.

The Nature of Mankind

Something I wrote when I was fed up of algebra. I normally write poems but somehow I ended up writing this instead.

It is in the nature of mankind to form groups and societies where only the selected are welcome, where only certain beliefs and ideas are maintained and where those harboring other thoughts are bound to be ridiculed or exiled. It is in the nature of mankind to promote free speech and expression and then to discriminate on the words spoken before listening to what is said. It is in the nature of mankind to assume their supremacy above all others in this world, to refuse to learn from their mistakes because we refuse to acknowledge them at all. It is in the nature of mankind to do as we please and then to turn away from the consequence, leaving a trail of fury and hatred behind. It is in the nature of mankind to create havoc and mayhem and to leave behind a mess that can never be cleaned. It is in the nature of mankind to do as only we can do; to be as only we can, to talk as only we can, to walk this Earth as only we can.
